Filling in the White Space

Filling in the White Space

“Writing about someone’s life, even if this person is close to you as a parent, isn’t so much about making the invisible visible. His life wasn’t invisible to him! I realized that writing about his life, at least in this particular essay, was about making the visible, visible to others. My father is a Guatemalan man. If one only judged Central American men from the media, the current and dominant narratives about people fleeing Central America and trying to seek asylum at the Mexico/U.S. border, one witnesses one narrative. But in going a mile deep, not wide, I wanted to share a story of one individual, a story that isn’t often shared.” Jennifer De Leon
