“These uplifting examples show real people engaged in meaningful struggle. Too often in school, “people” are just theoretical characters who symbolize the author's intent or history. Extending all learning to civic engagement reminds students (and teachers) that the content we learn can help us engage with the real stories and challenges of the people around us.
